Generation O Uniform #2 "Gang Green"

The second uni drop happened today. See part 1 here. Supposedly they have six total? But they will need to speed it up since we only have about five weeks till opening day!

This one is called "Gang Green" and ostensibly references the the 1994-1995 season/s when they had a really good defense and went to the Rose Bowl and Cotton Bowl with Kenny Wheaton and Alex Molden.

The hype video plays that up.

The actual uniform is not really a throwback to that era since they already have that from last season. So it might be me being picky but I'm fine with them calling it Gang Green in a broad sense but to so intimately peg it to the 1990s seems to mix messages.  I say that because the actual uniform really calls back to Harrington/Mariota days of the last 20 years and is kind of an homage to the 2014 Mariota Rose bowl vs FSU in 2015

And even earlier in the week they teased this release with Joey and his helmet in a cute video. But that old helmet was the dark mallard green color-changing version with the first O from 1999 onwards. I personally wish they had actually brought back a dark green helmet.

But thankfully they also released a video with the talking head designers explaing that this is a homage to multiple decades so that makes it better in my mind.

So this new set has these features

  • Apple Green colorway which is linked to Mariota days and the mono-apple is famous from the Rose Bowl game vs. FSU!
  • Golden yellow that is warmer than previous lightning yellow and used in previous throwbacks
  • Collegiate block numbers that are not like any non-throwback jerseys since 1998
  • Helmet with O on the side, for the first time since a few stints in 2015-2017. But really a hallmark of the Joey Harrington and beyond years from 1999-2011. This appears to be glossier helmet than past apple green versions, but not like the mallard one that this pays homage to.
  • The non-Disney Duck head which was introduced in the 2015 season.
