Holiday Bowl, December 28, 2022

The Ducks won in a cardiac manner against the Mack Brown-coached North Carolina. This all-white combo is most similar to their game vs. WSU and the outcome was very similar! Dan Lanning has won 10 games in his first season as a head coach.

2022 marked the fourth time the Ducks have played in the Holiday Bowl, and their record is now 3-1. Their first time in San Diego in 2000, coincidently, was against a Mack Brown-coached Texas team. A look back at past Holidays:

2000 Oregon 35, Texas 30

Much like 2022, UO lost the Civil War, a chance at Rose Bowl, and limped into the Holiday. But their bowl victory then was their first 10-win season in history!

Week 13: Civil War-November 26, 2022

This is the third game not officially called the "Civil War," but I've yet to read any people who wanted it changed except the UO and OSU then-presidents in 2020. So I continue to call it the "Civil War." For the 6th Civil War in a row, the Ducks have gone mono, with this being a duplicate of last year's victory. Even the Beavers are wearing the same black/orange/orange as last season. This set is almost identical to the Georgia game this year, but with green facemasks.

The previous 5 games-several of them being color-on-color:

Week 12: November 19, 2022

The last home game of the season for the Ducks, after a brutal loss to Washington last week. Wishfully looking to exorcise some demons, they chose an interesting combo here. Last year they wore this in a week 11 victory over WSU, and it's the exact inverse of their week 12 loss to this Utah squad. Looking to have an inverse result!

Looking back in history, this combo is under-represented, but there are some interesting times they have worn this combo. Before last season you have to go back to the Helfrich/Chip years and they seem to have worn this combo only 4 times before 2021. Before 2022, they are 3-2 in this combo.

Week 11: November 12, 2022

The Ducks went all-yellow against the all-purple Huskies. This was a rare color-on-color matchup for these two rivals. Unfortunately the Ducks ended up losing. Mono yellow was worn once last season, once in 2019, three times in 2018, once in 2017, and once in 2013.

Week 10: November 5, 2022

Eggshell combined with Nightmare Green make their second appearance of the season this weekend. A exact retread of last season's Pac-12 Championship Game loss and a similar combo to the opening game loss to Auburn in 2019...the Ducks hope to reverse that result with a win at lowly Colorado. Since Nightmare is almost black, i'll classify this combo as black/white/black. So using that metric this is the sixth time in the past 20 years they have worn this, with three of them occurring in the last 4 seasons. If you classify this as dark green, then this is the 14th time in the modern era of dark green being an option. Chip Kelly liked this combo.

So far this season they have not repeated a look and this is the third time that Nightmare helmets have been worn.

Week 9: October 29, 2022

Coming off their biggest and most viewed win in their Beat Cancer blackouts after the eggshell set, it's kinda refreshing to go back to normal road school colors. It would be only marginally improved with a bit more yellow, but I'm glad they stuck with yellow wings. Last season they lost in this exact combo at Utah, but in 2020, they beat Utah in this combo (but with green helmet wings) in the Pac-12 Championship.

Getting Dressed up for UCLA

The last few years (especially against Chip Kelly) Oregon has donned specialty uniforms when they play UCLA. Thanks to Fox CFB, here is  handy primer on the last decade+ of Oregon dominance against UCLA.

Those last 3 wins have produced the 3 most recent special one-off uniforms as well:

Week 8: October 22, 2022

A huge game in Eugene this weekend with ESPN Gameday coming to preside over the Top-10 matchup between UCLA and Oregon. A long-planned "pinktober" uniform highlighting cancer awareness brings hot pink accents on the helmet wings and multiple part of the black uniform.  See my post from last week about their other cancer uniforms over the years.

Midpoint review 2022 (No Duck game)

With the Ducks off this weekend, at the exact midpoint of the regular season, I figured it would be a good time to take stock and look forward.

So far this season they have worn some really strong combos and spread the love around their main colors decently well. Here are the number of items (helmet, jersey, pants) worn in each color:

  • Green: 5
  • Yellow: 3
  • White: 5
  • Black/Nightmare:5

So my hope for the rest of this season would be that there would be a nice mix of green and especially yellow, against what would seem to be a slate of high-profile competition on national TV like Utah, UCLA, UW, OSU and possibly USC. The Ducks have 3 home and 3 road left. Next weekend is UCLA and we are getting the return of pink.

At this midpoint of last few years the Ducks tended to be a bit off balance, colorwise:

  • In 2021, the first half was light on green and heavy on yellow
  • In 2020's shortened season they again wore very little green
  • 2019 saw very little yellow
  • 2018 had complete mono the first 4 games and matching jersey/pants for ALL games except for the Redbox Bowl.

Stomping out disease uniforms

While its more than a  week until these hit the gridiron, Oregon announced its week 8 set for the huge UCLA game on October 22. As most people suspected, the Ducks  wear pink, and this is the third time they have worn pink in October to bring awareness to breast cancer, so here is a rundown of their past efforts linking fashion and disease:

Week 6: October 8, 2022

The Eggshell returns! A personal non-favorite of mine is back, in a repeat of the exact set that the Ducks won at UCLA last season. For some reason all the pregame promo photos of this supposedly Nightmare Green set make it look like the details are actually black or very dark gray. Only a slight green sheen on the number and the helmet wings give this away as green. So I'm going to have to trust that this is the same as last season?

Since the Ducks have not won in Tucson in 11 years, I'm kinda afraid of the non-green/yellow curse for important road games.

Week 5: October 1, 2022

Pac-12 After Dark this weekend is a colorful night under the lights. Oregon brings its full school colors out against Stanford. This green/green/yellow combo is relatively uncommon for the Ducks. Last time was Civil War 2013 and then you have to go back to single games in 2004 and 2005—all victories for seemingly its only other use.

Week 4: September 24, 2022

Pac-12 play begins with the Ducks traveling to always-difficult Pullman to play WSU. The Cougars are wearing their mono-anthracite, which the underdogs famously wore to beat the Ducks in 2018. That day Oregon wore silver/white/white so it was an elegant—if not boring—matchup.

This year the Ducks hope to avoid a repeat (thankfully ESPN Gameday crew is not in Pullman this year) and garner some road mojo by replicating their look from their 2021 trip to Ohio State with an all white set. That was the last time the Ducks went full stormtropper, and before that you have to go back to 2016 to find the last use of all-white. The little bit of green in this set will provide the onyl real color paired with the dark WSU set.

Week 3: September 17, 2022

For the BYU game Oregon wore its mono Nightmare Green uniform. Since they did not wear Nightmare Green jerseys last season, this is the first use with the diamond plate shoulders that debuted in 2021. This is also the first time since the 2019 Pac-12 Championship game victory that they have worn this combo, and they also wore this look with the chrome helmets in the 2020 Rose Bowl. They wore Nightmare Green helmets and pants twice last year paired with the "eggshell" jersey.

Week 2: September 10, 2022

Last weekend was a great uniform worn in a horrible game. It will be interesting to see what becomes of the mono-apple green in the future.

This weekend the Ducks break out the yellow and black. This appears to be the first use of yellow helmet with solid black wings and facemask. And this exact combo is being used for the first time. There was the loss to Boise State in 2008 that used the dreaded "grellow" helmet which was kinda yellow but also had lots of dark green parts.

It feels like yellow and black have been common the last decade or so, but this is only the second time since 2017, because Mario Cristobal used Nightmare Green instead of black most often. Almost always when the Ducks where a yellow helmet is is in a mono-yellow set or non-yellow jersey.

Week 1: September 3, 2022

The Dan Lanning era kicked (literaly since they only scored a FG) off with this all-apple green combo against a dominant Georgia in Atlanta. Being a special kickoff game the teams went color-on-color. It was like Christmas (but no gifts for the Ducks) in September!

The yellow facemasks appear to be a new addition to the green helmets, as I can't find any green helmets in Duck history with yellow facemasks. And the only yellow mask on non-yellow helmet I could find was 2016 with black helmet and angry duck decal.

They last went mono-apple green in last year's game against Oregon State. Their most famous use of this combo was in the Mariota Rose Bowl victory against Florida State in 2015.

What to wear

I'm a bit late, but this is what the UO says to wear to each game this season, which might give some clue about the player's uniforms? Doubt the Ducks are wearing green jerseys in away games against Georgia, Cal and Colorado, but who knows about pink vs UCLA?

Duck uniforms in Big Games

Only 10 days until the big game with Georgia and we are still wondering what the Ducks will wear!

I've done several blog posts on their big game attire over the years:
